Family of Amy Joyner-Francis resolves suit with school district

The family of Amy Joyner-Francis has resolved their lawsuit against the New Castle County Vocational Technical School District.

Joyner-Francis died in 2016 of cardiac arrest after classmates Trinity Carr and Zion Snow attacked her in a Howard High School bathroom.

Joyner-Francis had a rare congenital heart condition. She was 16 years old.

Both attackers were found guilty of criminal conspiracy. The Delaware Supreme Court overturned a Family Court judge’s decision last year reversing a criminally negligent homicide conviction against Carr.

Some of Joyner-Francis's family members filed a civil suit in the spring of last year against the New Castle County Vo-Tech School District - which includes Howard High School - and the two attackers.

An attorney representing the family members wrote in a letter this week the complaint against the district was resolved in a mediation conference Monday.

The family member’s lawsuit against Carr and Snow has not been resolved. A trial is scheduled for February of next year, but the attorney for the family members is requesting postponement.
