Delmar Police officer injured in assault dies

Delaware State Police

A Delmar Police corporal attacked on last Sunday while responding to reports of an assault has been declared clinically deceased.

Delaware State Police and the Town of Delmar made the announcement at a press briefing Wednesday night.

Delmar Police Chief Ivan Barkley said that Keith Heacook would be taken off of life support soon and his family has “graciously decided to donate his organs.”

Delaware Attorney General Kathy Jennings says charges against Randon Wilkerson, the man accused attacking Heacook and an elderly couple in the couple’s Yorkshire Estates home, will be upgraded to murder.

Delaware State Police say that the couple was released from the hospital and they are recovering at home.

In a statement, Gov. John Carney called Cpl. Heacook’s death “heartbreaking news” for Delmar and the state.

Funeral arrangements for Heacook are expected to be announced later this week.
