Delaware announces plan to accelerate vaccination of educators

Delaware is ramping up its efforts to vaccinate educators to meet President Biden’s pledge to provide at least one vaccine dose to all educators by the end of the month.

Gov. John Carney’s office announced today a large scale vaccination event for school teachers and staff next weekend at the Dover International Speedway.

Last week, the state distributed about 16,000 vaccine doses at the speedway with help from FEMA.

The state Department of Education will extend invitations to school employees seeking a vaccine next week.

Walgreens is also pausing its vaccination of other groups to prioritize appointments with teachers, staff and child care providers.

So far, DOE reports more than 5,500 educators and school staff have received at least one shot —about a third of those seeking a vaccination. More than 2,200 Delaware child care workers have also received at least their first shot.

Gov. Carney’s office also says the state began shipping vaccine doses to poultry companies to begin vaccinating their most vulnerable workers.

“We are building on our ongoing efforts to prioritize vaccinations for educators, school staff and child care workers across our state who have stepped up throughout this COVID-19 crisis,” said Carney in a statement. “Our goal remains the same. We want to distribute this life-saving vaccine in a way that's fast and fair."

State officials say Delaawre and its partners have administered 253,535 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine as of midnight Friday.
