Colonial School District alerts families to mumps case

A New Castle County high schooler has been diagnosed with the mumps.

Delaware’s Division of Public Health notified Colonial School District Thursday that a William Penn High School student tested positive for the viral disease.

The District’s Behavioral Health Director Dr. John Cooper says the district has since done what it can to make the public aware and reached out to its unvaccinated student population.

“We have a great set of systems within the state to keep us notified when something comes up and we feel like we had a quick, and efficient and transparent response,” said Dr. Cooper.

The district’s data says 16 of William Penn’s 2,200 students have not received their Measles, Mumps and Rubella vaccine. Cooper says those student’s families have been contacted and made aware of the risk.

The last date other students may have been exposed to the infected student was Wednesday, January 28.

The district says mumps symptoms can develop from 12 to 25 days after exposure.
