City of Dover narrows search for new police chief

Delaware Public Media

The City of Dover is closer to naming its new police chief.

The search for a new chief got underway in September after Chief Marvin Mailey retired earlier this year.

Deputy Tim Stump has served as interim chief over the past several months while the City’s five-member selection committee worked toward filling the position.

Dover Mayor Robin Christiansen is chair of that committee and says an initial list of candidates has been winnowed down.

“We had our most recent meeting. We had received 22 very well qualified applications from across the country. And we narrowed it down to eight,”said Christiansen.

Christiansen adds that thebgroup of eight includes out-of-state candidates and in-house candidates, “And the next process of the committee will be to interview those eight and find the most qualified person to be the leader of the Dover Police Department.”

Face-to face interviews are slated to happen over the next few weeks.  The goal is have a new chief in place by mid-December.

Christiansen says the city is looking for a new chief that will continue community policing and working to build trust between the community and police.
