Sussex County announces community meetings as reassessment process begins

Sussex County plans five community meetings this month to give residents an overview of its upcoming property reassessment.

The reassessment of more than 180,000 commercial and residential properties is the first in Sussex County since 1974.  Tyler Technologies was hired to handle the work that begins in October.

Sussex, Kent and New Castle Counties all agreed earlier this year to conduct reassessments as part of the settlement of an educational equity lawsuit.

In 2020, a Chancery Court judge ruled Delaware’s property tax system unconstitutional, noting the values currently used for assessments are outdated, and therefore inequitable.

Public meetings explaining how properties will be evaluated and their values re-calculated start Thursday, Sept. 23, 2021 with a session at the Milton Fire Department from from 2 to 4 p.m.

Subsequent meetings will be held in Georgetown, Bethany Beach, Millsboro and Seaford - with one virtual meeting planned for Sept. 27th.

Sussex County expects to complete its reassessment in 2024.
