Delaware’s General Assembly is postponing the remainder of its legislative session until further notice.

House Speaker Pete Schwartzkopf and Senate President Pro Temp David McBride made the announcement Wednesday in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Lawmakers were scheduled to reconvene after break this past Tuesday, but made the decision to postpone one week at the recommendation of federal and local health officials.

Now the session is postponed for the foreseeable future as the state battles the virus locally.

In a joint-statement, Schwatzkpf and McBride reiterated there is no firm date in place to resume the session, but added plans are being put into place for lawmakers to reconvene if needed to pass emergency legislation addressing the coronavirus outbreak.

The General Assembly is required by the state's Constitution to pass an operating budget by June 30. The statement says plans are being discussed to meet that obligation should Delaware’s State of Emergency stretch into spring.
