State Sen. Ernie Lopez seeks third term in office

Sen. Ernie Lopez

State Sen. Ernie Lopez (R-Lewes) is campaigning for a third term.

The Republican is trying to hold the Lewes/Rehoboth area seat he won back in 2012.

Lopez was first elected to a two-year term, defeating Democrat Andrew Staton. He fought off Democratic challenger Claire Snyder Hall in 2014.

Lopez is the first Latino elected to the state Senate.

“I take a lot of pride in that, in representing a district here in Eastern Sussex County that has people from all different backgrounds, both economically and also socially," he said. "And again, I feel it’s important that when I go to work everyday, that I keep in mind that I represent a diverse constituency.”

Lopez is campaigning as someone who works across the aisle, solves problems and puts his Sixth District constituents above politics.

He points to legislation allowing minors access to medical cannabis oil one of his biggest accomplishments.

“To just be in office for a few years and being able to pass a major, bipartisan piece of legislation that makes children in Delaware healthier and that’s already saved lives," he said. "That’s been very important to me.”

Lopez also said he’s a strong supporter of public education and helping small businesses. He adds he supports protecting Delaware’s coast from environmental changes.
