State Sen. Bethany Hall-Long (D-Middletown) took out five other Democrats on her way to securing her party’s nomination for Lieutenant Governor Tuesday night.

The crowded field greatly split the vote, with Hall-Long earning 29 percent.

“Delaware really is at a crossroads where our economic health, our physical and mental health issues, really do resonate,” she said.

Her closest challenger for Lieutenant Governor, Sherry Dorsey Walker grabbed about 22 percent, while Kathy McGuinness and Ciro Poppiti took in roughly 17 percent each.

With her win, Hall-Long leaves open a senate seat that is sure to be hotly contested by Republicans looking to gain more of a foothold in an upper chamber they haven’t controlled in decades.

Despite barely edging a GOP challenger in 2014, she says she’s not worried her seat will flip in a special election.

“We have a very solid Democrat base in my community and race and…that was the largest Republican turnout in 60 years so, to me, I feel very confident, very comfortable with that,” she said.

Hall-Long now joins Congressman John Carney as the heavily favored Democratic ticket to win Delaware’s top two elected offices.

She faces Republican La Mar Gunn in November.
