State labor secretary announces retirement

Saying he wants to spend more time with family, state Labor Secretary John McMahon is the latest member of the governor’s cabinet to step down as Jack Markell enters his final year in office.

McMahon saw Delaware through the Great Recession as one of Gov. Markell’s original cabinet members from when he took office in 2009.

In a statement, Markell says McMahon "has also played a vital role in helping our state tap into the talents of groups who were too often unable to access the employment opportunities they deserved, from recently returning veterans to people with disabilities."

During McMahon's tenure, the Labor Department expanded online tools to connect job seekers with employers and help people craft resumes.

In his statement, Markell also touted Delaware’s progress in decreasing on-the-job injury and illness rates by 23 percent from 2008 to 2013.

No timeframe has been set for McMahon’s departure, but that and the governor’s nominee to replace him will be announced in the coming days.
