A sewer rehabilitation project along Route 13 in Dover is continuing.

A sewer rehabilitation project continues along Route 13 in Dover.

The $8.4 million project is addressing a significant stretch of concrete sewer pipe that runs under Route 13.

The portion that runs from Del Tech’s Dover Campus - south to the Capital Commons Shopping Center at Garden Lane - has been increasingly deteriorating over the past five years.

“Several years ago we had a line break near the area of Lowes and C.F. Schwartz (Toyota) in Dover and we did a temporary repair at that time. And now, we’re concerned about the condition of the line,” said Diana Golt, public works director for Kent County.

Golt says repairing that line, which runs down the median of Route 13 all the way from Smyrna to Frederica, requires installation of a bypass pipe.

“The preparation for this project has been going on for quite some time," said Golt. "The actual project work and what people are seeing in the middle of Route 13 - it started in July this year - right after the 4th - we started putting up construction signs. And around July 8 - actual construction started in the ground.”

Golt says the project involves slip-lining,where a smaller pipe is slipped inside the damaged pipe to block damage. She notes the original piping was first installed in the 1970’s.

Golt says the project is on schedule and should wrap up by Thanksgiving.

The County has set up a website offering updates about the project. You can access that website here.
