First dose of winter weather in 2019 on its way

Delaware Public Media

The First State can expect its first significant snowfall of the year this weekend.

Saturday afternoon the storm is expected move in from the west and continue into late Sunday morning or early afternoon.

But National Weather Service meteorologist Trent Davis says the bulk of the powder is expected to miss Delaware.

“Most of the heaviest snow is going to be more in Virginia and parts of Southern Maryland—not on the Eastern Shore, but on the western side closer to DC—but the impacts still could be somewhat problematic across Delaware," said Davis.

Davis says parts of Sussex County could see up to five inches.

He predicts less accumulation in the Northern Delaware with 2-4 inches expected in the New Castle County area.

Davis urges drivers to mind the roads Saturday evening. If the storm swings further north than expected it could include rain and sleet mixed with the snow.
