Latest round of heavy rain could produce more flooding

Heavy rains and winds are expected throughout the First State Thursday evening.

The National Weather Service predicts about two inches of rain in Delaware overnight creating the potential for flooding of small rivers and streams.

There’s also a chance of thunderstorms, and winds are expected to gust up to 45 mph. But National Weather Service Meteorologist Jonathan O’Brien says flooding is the primary concern.

“It’s a sizeable storm system--a lot of rain, very expansive. It’s producing severe weather all the way to the Southeast US today. More for us just a rain issue, but the underlying message is the flood threat," said O'Brien.

O’Brien warns the coast could potentially see some flooding tomorrow at high tide as well. A flood watch is in effect throughout the region until Friday evening.

AAA spokesman Jim Lardear warns drivers to mind the inclement weather.

“Slow down. Remember to not drive through any standing water, and if you can alter your travel plans if necessary to avoid the worst of the weather that is rolling through here,” said Lardear.

The storm is expected to pull away tomorrow afternoon.
