DelDOT holds 14th annual Litter Free Delaware event this weekend

The 14th Annual “Imagine A Litter Free Delaware” event is this weekend.";s:

Each Fall, Delaware’s Department of Transportation (DelDOT) holds an “Imagine A Litter Free Delaware Day” cleanup. This year’s cleanup is this weekend.

The “Imagine A Litter Free Delaware” day encourages the agencies’ several hundred Adopt-A-Highway volunteers to do one last road cleanup before the end of the year.

DelDOT community relations director C.R. McLeod says the idea is to clear area roads of debris before the onset of colder, winter weather.

“During the winter months we know it’s obviously harder to get out. If there is snowy conditions as well, that’s not very conducive to picking up litter. This is our 14th year doing it; we’ve had good response over the years where groups come out and spend a couple of hours and help us clean up our roads,” McLeod said.

He says there are many reasons for the cleanup, but the main reason is to make sure that the roads are free and clear of debris.

“As we all know, anyone who’s out on our roads, we have a litter problem in our State. And we’re working to address it. We’ve had a task force specifically looking at ways at how we can address it. And our several hundred Adopt-A-Highway groups are a critical part of this effort,” said McLeod.

McLeod says previous “Imagine A Litter Free Delaware Day” events have collected tons of trash.

This year’s event is both Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  If rain gets in the way, it will move to Saturday, November 17th and Sunday, November 18th.

DelDOT is still looking for volunteers to help and anyone interested in participating in this weekend’s event; you can get more info here.
