More First State travelers expected over the holidays

Delaware Public Media

Holiday travel is expected to be up this year with hundreds of thousands of Delawareans hitting the road and taking to the skies to celebrate the season with family and friends.

AAA Mid-Atlantic projects almost 350,000 Delawareans will travel by car or air between Dec. 23 and New Year's Day.

AAA Mid-Atlantic Director of Public and Government Affairs Jim Lardear said that’s an over 2% increase from last year.

"People feel a little bit better about where the economy is, things like the labor market and some rising wages," Lardear said.

Even though gas prices are up almost 30 cents per-gallon compared to last year, Lardear doesn’t see that deterring people from traveling this holiday season.

AAA projects national travel to be up 1.5% this holiday season, with around 100 million travelers.

If you drive this holiday season, Lardear said to make sure to check your battery, tire pressure and windshield wipers before heading out.
