Roads flooding as rain hammers First State

University of Delaware/Delaware Sea Grant

Delaware transportation officials say you should be on the lookout for road flooding through Friday night.

Crews are currently barricading flooded roads around the state, according to Jim Westhoff of Delaware’s Department of Transportation.

“Or if the road is still open but there’s some water on the road we’ll station a vehicle there with the lights on to give people some warning that there’s some water on the road,” he said.

Westhoff said you should be especially cautious of flooding at night when it’s more difficult to see water on the road.

And you should never drive through water if you don’t know how deep it is. If you do drive through water, you should do it slowly.

The National Weather Service measured more than eight inches of rainfall in Sussex County over Wednesday night. The First State may see up to four inches more rain by Friday night.
