Defendant in Howard High death appears in court

A judge will decide whether or not one of the girls charged in the death of a fellow Wilmington high school student will be tried as an adult by the end of next week.

16-year-old Trinity Carr appeared in New Castle County Family Court Monday morning to argue she should be tried as a juvenile.

Carr is charged with criminally negligent homicide after prosecutors say she assaulted 16-year-old Amy Joiner-Francis in a Howard High bathroom in April.

Joiner-Francis later died due to complications from a pre-existing heart condition – something authorities say wouldn’t have happened without the assault.

Carr could face up to eight years in prison if charged as an adult.

Two other girls, Zion Snow and Chakeira Wright, face third degree criminal conspiracy charges for helping plan the confrontation. Those charges carry up to a year in prison if convicted.

Judge Robert Coonin says he’ll issue a decision on whether Carr will be tried as an adult by the end of next week.
