Prosecutor regains law license after courthouse gun prank

Delaware Public Media

A Sussex County prosecutor who was suspended from practicing law after orchestrating a prank involving a bailiff drawing his gun on a colleague has been readmitted to the bar.

The Delaware Supreme Court returned Adam Gelof’s law license Monday after serving a 30-day suspension.

Last February, Gelof convinced the chief bailiff in Sussex County to draw his gun on a fellow prosecutor for eating hardboiled eggs over Gelof’s paperwork, the smell of which makes him gag.

After several rounds of convincing, the bailiff then kicked in the door to a conference room with his gun pointed at the man, telling him to “keep the eggs away from the files.”

A detective in the room later reported the incident, leading to suspensions and demotions for both Gelof and the bailiff.

Court security officers are no longer allowed to carry guns into courtrooms because of the incident.

Gelof is still employed by the state, but it’s unclear if he regained his senior status and pay grade.
