Kent Co. hosts annual Safe Summer event

Delaware Public Media

Kent County hosts its annual Safe Summer Day Saturday.

The event is designed to be a fun, interactive learning experience for families.

John Witzke (WITS-key) is a paramedic with Kent County Department of Public Safety and an organizer of the event. He says accidents spike in summer time, especially with children.

“People are outside. They’re enjoying the weather.  It’s a time of vacation. It’s a time of kids being in a less supervised role. Usually they’re in school where they’ve got a teacher. In summertime they’re home, they’re out of daycare,” said Witzke.

Witzke adds the event will feature demonstrations from more than 40 health organizations.

“Camden Fire Company will be there to show off their jaws of life capabilities to cut a car apart to show how we can remove a victim who’s been involved in a serious accident safely and efficiently," said Witzke.

Other demonstrations include police dog training exercises and a smokehouse that will teach kids how to escape a house fire.

It will also feature free car seat checks, tips for avoiding skin cancer and health insurance information.

There will be food vendors, an ice cream truck and bounce houses for small children.

The event takes place from 10 A-M to 2 P-M at Brecknock Park in Camden.
