One woman is in critical condition and several were injured after a man backed a car into a crowded picnic area during Delaware State University’s homecoming celebration Saturday night.
Dover Police say 28-year-old Gregory Ligon was drunk while trying to park his car, but left it in reverse.
After getting back in his car to get it out of gear, police say Ligon stepped on the gas pedal instead of the brake, with the car jumping over a curb, striking a total of seven people – pinning a woman against a tree.
The unnamed 21-year-old woman was flown to Christiana Hospital in critical condition, suffering from a broken back, broken ribs and multiple internal injuries.
Six other adults were treated at Bayhealth Kent General for foot, leg, hand and shoulder injuries.
Ligon has been charged with DUI, 1st degree vehicular assault and six counts of 2nd degree vehicular assault.
“It was an unfortunate accident that took place on Saturday evening, and our thoughts and prayers are with all persons who suffered injuries in the incident,” said DSU president Dr. Harry Williams in a statement Sunday. “Our primary priority continues to be the safety of our students, employees and visitors.” “Staff from Student Health Services stand ready to provide support to our students during this difficult time.”
School officials also noted DSU prohibits alcohol on campus with the exception of special non-student events that receive permission. No such special permission was given for any events on campus Saturday.
The incident came less than 12 hours after another alleged drunk driver killed four people and injured 44 others at Oklahoma State University’s homecoming parade.
