State GOP embraces Business Roundtable budget study in weekly message

State Republicans are touting a new study on Delaware's budget woes that calls for cutting spending and stimulating the economy to avoid a major deficit.

In the state GOP's weekly message, state Sen. Bryant Richardson (R-Laurel) says Republican leadership has been saying many of the same things the study released last week from Delaware's Business Roundtable points out.

"Senate Republican Leader Gary Simpson said this independent study reaffirms what Republican lawmakers have been saying for years, that our state’s economy continues to underperform and that we need to start work creating a framework to reduce government spending."

Richardson says the report is a good example of why the First State's business community -- like the CEOs who comprise the roundtable -- should play a role in setting a "growth agenda" in coming years.

Full text of weekly GOP message:

Hello, I'm State Senator Bryant Richardson.

An independent study detailing Delaware’s budget challenges highlights the need for responsible government spending and job creation.

The 27-page report, released this week from the Delaware Business Roundtable, concludes that the state’s annual operating budget faces numerous challenges, among them a revenue portfolio that is not responsive to the economy, unsustainable expenditure growth and the need for more robust economic growth. The study predicts a budget shortfall of over $600 million within 10 years, UNLESS SPENDING IS CURTAILED AND THE BUSINESS CLIMATE IMPROVES.

Senate Republican Leader Gary Simpson said this independent study reaffirms what Republican lawmakers have been saying for years, that our state’s economy continues to under perform and that we need to start work creating a framework to reduce government spending.

Senate Republican Whip Greg Lavelle, said he's hopeful this report – combined with the creation of a new task force to examine state spending – will generate meaningful dialogue that is long overdue.

Mark Turner, President and CEO of WSFS and Chairman of the Delaware Business Roundtable, said it is "essential that the business community play a significant role with regard to the creation of a growth agenda for Delaware.”

Successful implementation of positive economic policies are an important way to improve state revenues by boosting income and consumer spending.

In 2009, the Delaware Business Roundtable worked with the Markell Administration by offering loaned executives trained in Six Sigma and Total Quality Management to work with cabinet secretaries and their staffs.

I believe this type of cooperation between business leaders and elected officials will put our state on the right path toward prosperity.

Thank you for taking time to listen.
