Delaware State Fair kicks off Thursday

Delaware Public Media

As many as 300,000 people will flock to the state fairgrounds in Harrington starting this week for everything from food and live music to circus animals and hypnosis.

The Delaware State Fair gets underway Thursday at noon and runs through Aug. 1. Organizer Danny Aguilar says they're expecting cooler weather by then, and will have more than 400 vendors on site.

"We're basically filled to the brim," he says. "All the available spaces that we have are filled, ready to go for exhibits."

Those include the Hollywood Circus' petting zoo, which is adding a second giraffe this year.

"Folks can actually feed carrots to the giraffe," Aguilar says. "Twiggs the Giraffe has been the star of the show, but now he's got a friend. So that should be a great attraction for the kids."

Other attractions include an ice cream-making contest, hypnotist and demolition derby.

The fair will also feature a beer and wine garden and big-name acts at their grandstand stage. New Kids on the Block is set to play Sunday night, followed by Meghan Trainor on Monday and other country and blues acts through next week. Grand Funk Railroad will top things off at the fair's craft beer festival on its last day.

The fair is now in its 96th year. It drew 282,000 people last year.

Folks can buy tickets and build their own schedule online or with the fair's mobile app.
