North Wilmington deer hunt called off

Delaware Public Media

A deer hunt scheduled to take place in a wooded area of Brandywine Hundred near a number of residential neighborhoods has been canceled.

The deer hunt, which would have been carried out by master archery hunters, was the brainchild of state senator Greg Lavelle (R-Sharpley) and signed on to by New Castle County Executive Tom Gordon (D).

New Castle County spokesman Antonio Prado says once residents in the surrounding communities of Sharpley, Edenridge and Rockland were informed of the managed hunt, calls came pouring in.

"They didn’t want to see deer running through their backyard with an arrow sticking in its neck, in front of their children," he said.

Prado added some community members were concerned archery was an inhumane and potentially ineffective way to thin the region’s high deer population.

Local leaders met Thursday and decided to call off the deer hunt.

Prado says officials exploring other ways of managing North Wilmington’s large deer population.

"They definitely didn't want archery. And we’re going to have to figure out some other way to thin the herd," said Prado.
