Ex-Wesley College QB gets another chance in the NFL

Former Wesley College quarterback Joe Callahan is getting another shot at playing in the NFL.

Callahan signed a reserve/futures contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this week, putting him on their 90-man roster this offseason and for training camp in 2019.

Callahan was not on an NFL roster during the 2018 regular season after being cut by the Eagles September 1st following Birds’ preseason finale.  He threw for 262 yards, one touchdown and one interception during his preseason stint with the Eagles.

The ex-Wolverine star was with Green Bay most of the 2016 and 2017 seasons and became the first Wesley football player to play in regular season NFL game when he entered in the Packers’ 2017 finale against Detroit.

Callahan completed 5 of 7 passes for 11 yards in that contest.

The 6-1 signal-caller drew NFL attention in 2015 when he became the first NCAA Division Three quarterback to throw for over 5,000 yards in a single season.  He also won Division Three’s version of the Heisman Trophy – the Gagliardi Trophy – in that record setting senior season.

Another former Wolverine, offensive lineman Matt Gono, was on the Atlanta Falcons roster this season.  He was only active for one game, last weekend's 34-32 Atlanta win over Tampa Bay, but he did not play.
