Delaware State Univ. hires new Athletic Director

Delaware State University

Delaware State University has a new Athletic Director, tapping Scott Gines to fill the post.

Gines comes from Division II Texas A&M-Kingsville, where he’s been since 2007.

He started there as Athletic Director and has been that university’s Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics and Campus Recreation since 2013. The past six years have been the most successful ever for Texas A&M Kingsville sports – with 28 NCAA post-season bids and two team national championships.

He also developed the school's gender equity plan, which included adding women’s golf, tennis, and beach volleyball to help nearly double women’s student-athlete participation during his tenure.

Annual athletics operational revenues also increased by over $3.6 million during his time at the helm, while  $12 million was raised for new facility construction and upgrades

“In hiring Dr. Scott Gines as the University’s new Athletics Director, the institution has gained an executive with a diverse and proven background in overseeing intercollegiate sports departments as well as fundraising,” said DSU Acting President Wilma Mishoe in a statement. “We have high hopes and expectations for the University’s Department of Athletics under his capable leadership.”

“As a Land Grant, flagship HBCU in a capital city, DSU can become a Division I prototype for classroom, community and competitive success,” Gines said in his own statement. “I am moved by President Mishoe’s passion and vision for DSU. She embraces the value of successful college athletics done well and how it can positively impact campus and community culture.”

Gines will officially take the reins of DSU Athletics in mid-July. Interim AD Mary Hill has been in charge since Delaware State fired it previous AD, Skip Perkins,  last November.

He has some immediate work to do hiring two new basketball coaches. DSU let men’s coach Keith Walker and women’s coach Barbara Burgess go back in February.
