UD fires its head football coach

Delaware Public Media

There’s a change at the top of the University of Delaware’s football program.

UD Athletic Director Christine Rawak announced Sunday head football coach Dave Brock has been fired.

The move comes after Saturday’s  24-17 loss at William and Mary.  That was the Blue Hens 4th straight loss after starting the season 2-0.

Brock was in his 4th season at UD.  He complied a 19-22 record in those 3 plus seasons, and was unable to lead the team to an NCAA playoff berth during his tenure.

Rawak, in a statement, thanked Brock for his service, but said “ultimately, the hard work and effort off the field did not result in the success that we expect on the field.”

Brock said going into this season he thought he had a playoff caliber team, but the squad’s 2-4 start makes its all but certain the team will miss the post-season for a sixth straight season.

Co-Defensive Coordinator Dennis Dottin-Carter will serve as interim head coach,  and a national search for Brock’s successor will begin immediately.

UD also announced Sunday it has let head Volleyball coach Bonnie Kenny go along with her Associate Head Coach Cindy Gregory.

In 15 years at the helm, Kenny led the Blue Hens to 5 CAA titles and four NCAA tournament appearances – but the program’s last winning season was in 2012 and the team is 8-13 this season.

The two coaches were put on administrative leave Oct. 7 without explanation.

“A?change in the leadership of our volleyball program was appropriate at this time,” said Rawak in a statement. “Our full support will go toward our student-athletes and coaches both on and off the court as they look to finish the season on a high note."

The coaching moves are the latest changes for an athletic department in transition.  Rawak was just took over as AD in May.  Just over a week after she was hired, Rawak hired Martin Inglesby as the school's new men's basketball coach.
