German grocer Lidl eyes Dover for new store

Public domain, Wikimedia

A new supermarket could soon take the place of a vacant lot on North Dupont Highway, between Wells Fargo and Dunkin’ Donuts.

The German supermarket chain Lidl has submitted an application to build a 36,185 square foot store on that site.

Lidl is a value grocer that sells discount goods. Its stores are usually about three-quarters the size of a typical neighborhood grocery store, like Safeway or Food Lion.

Lidl is aggressively expanding into the United States, with its focus currently on the Mid-Atlantic region.

It’s unclear when -or if- the market will open in Dover. It’s application for the current site has to be approved by the City of Dover planning commission on Monday, July 18.
