A pair of familiar names captured state championships in high school basketball this weekend.
Saturday, Sanford won its 8th boys’ state crown, defeating St. Georges Tech 39-32 behind 20 points from senior Mikey Dixon.
No school has won more state titles in basketball than Sanford (21-2), with its only losses coming to a pair of out-of state teams back in December.
St. Georges, still seeking its first state title, finished the year at 20-5.
Friday night, Ursuline secured its 16th girls state basketball championship - and second in a row - by holding off Sanford 39-34.
Ursuline sophomore Maggie Connolly hit all six of her free throws in the final 30 seconds to help seal the victory.
Ursuline finishes the year at 19-5, but undefeated against in-state foes.
Sanford also completed its season at 19-5.
