New location for Historic Lewes Farmers Market approved

The Historic Lewes Farmers Market will have a new home next year.

Lewes City Council has unanimously approved the market’s request to use George H.P. Smith Park in Lewes as its primary location for the 2016 season.

The popular market needed to find a new site after the Lewes Historical Society announced that a major renovation project to its grounds would prevent all events from being held on the property next year.

The temporary move doesn’t sit well with some Lewes residents. Portions of Smith Park are considered wetlands and opponents voiced concern about damage to the park in addition to parking issues.

Those in support, including state Department of Agriculture Secretary Ed Kee, pointed to the importance of supporting local growers.

The Historic Lewes Farmers Market will resume in May.
