New musical coming to Delaware Shakespeare in 2020

Delaware Shakespeare
A new season is about to get underway for Delaware Shakespeare.

There’s big news for the new year for Delaware Shakespeare’s 2020 Season.

Delaware Shakespeare is conjuring up some magic for it 2020 Season with a new musical.

“This year for our Community Tour, which is our program where we take a Shakespeare play throughout the State - travelling to locations like prisons and senior centers and community centers - we have commissioned two artists to write a brand new musical inspired by Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night.” So Delaware Shakespeare is doing a new musical in the Fall of 2020,” said David Stradley - the producing artistic director for Delaware Shakespeare.

Stradley says as the artists write and create the musical they may or may not keep the title as “Twelfth Night.”

Stradley says “Twelfth Night” is the tale of a young woman named Viola, who disguises herself as a man and becomes entangled in the courtship of two local aristocrats and upends conventions of romance and gender roles.

He notes that at the beginning of the play, Viola is shipwrecked and separated from her brother and thrown into a new land and forced to make her way in a tangled web of chaos that is depicted in the comedy.

“Our creators see some resonance in that with the immigrant story," said Stradley. "So they are pursuing the idea of having the musical be bi-lingual and having Viola be the Latina immigrant. So that could be something very interesting.”

Delaware Shakespeare is also accepting headshots and resumes for actors for its 2020 season, including its Summer Festival and Community Tour full productions. They can be sent to auditions@delshakes.org.

Monologue/song auditions will be held on Saturday, January 4 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. - by appointment only.

Casting is mainly for non-Equity actors, but Del Shakes does use 4-6 Equity actors each year on a Guest Artist Tier II contract.
