Fearless Girl extends NYC stay into 2018

A beloved statue coming out of a Delaware artist’s studio is extending its short New York City visit into a year-long residency.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Monday the statue “Fearless Girl” will stay in the city’s financial district into 2018.

The bronze sculpture depicts a young woman standing fearlessly with her hands on her hips, staring down an iconic 7,000 pound bull sculpture outside the New York Stock Exchange.

It was originally scheduled to stay in its location for two weeks before de Blasio granted an extension this this week, saying the statue symbolizes “standing up to fear, standing up to power, being able to find in yourself the strength to do what’s right.”

Kristen Visbal, of Lewes, created the sculpture, which was installed near Wall Street earlier this month in honor of International Women’s Day.

It quickly gained popularity on social media, gaining more than 28,000 signatures on a Change.Org petition to make it a permanent installation.

The statue will now stay in New York until the next International Women’s Day on March 8, 2018.

Delaware Public Media' s arts coverage is made possible, in part, by support from theDelaware Division of the Arts, a state agency dedicated to nurturing and supporting the arts in Delaware, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.
