'Fearless Girl' was born in Delaware

A Delaware-based artist is receiving international acclaim this week.

Kristen Visbal, of Lewes, created the sculpture “Fearless Girl” that was installed near Wall Street this week in honor of International Women’s Day.

The bronze sculpture depicts a young girl standing fearlessly with her hands on her hips, staring down an iconic 7,000 pound bull sculpture outside the New York Stock Exchange.

In a statement, artist Visbal said the sculpture “should inspire the young to dream as if anything were possible and simultaneously encourage today’s working woman to hold her ground, no matter what challenges may come barreling down the pike.”

A plaque at the girl's’ feet reads: ‘‘Know the power of women in leadership. SHE makes a difference.’’

The statue was commissioned by State Street Global Advisors. The investment firmis calling on the 3,500 businesses whose money it invests to increase the number of women on their corporate boards.

SSGA has a permit to keep the statue at its current location for a week.

But the statue is picking up massive popularity online and a Change.org petition has been launched to make it a permanent installation.
