Dover Comic Con draws in elaborate cosplayers, sets attendance record

Tim Rosser poses in his custom made Darth Vader suit. Hundreds of cosplayers descended on Dover Comic Con on Saturday.

Plenty of cape and cowl clad superheroes and villains descended upon downtown Dover over the weekend for Comic Con. Many showed up in custom-made gear, with different takes on classic characters.

The Dover Comic Con set an event record with over 10,000 people in attending, beating last year's record by over 3,000.

You had your comic staples, like Batman, Wonder Woman and Spider Man walking around The Green and pausing for selfies.

People were dressed up like other fan favorites, too. There were the Ghostbusters, anime characters and recent additions like El from Netflix’s new hit show Stranger Things.

But the most elaborate costume may have belonged to Tim Rosser , who put his own spin on an iconic villain.

“It’s an alternate reality version of Darth Vader. What could have happened if he could have fought Obi Wan Kenobi on Mustafar in his life support armor,” Rosser said.

So some background here, Anakin Skywalker, who would become Darth Vader, was badly injured in a fight on the lava planet Mustafar. He lost some limbs, got some prosthetics and crazy armor, and became the iconic Star Wars villain of the movies.

Rosser’s version asks what if he had had that armor during the fight?

Rosser stands over six feet tall in melted and burnt version of Vader’s get up. He thinks Vader would have won the fight and the entire Star Wars series would have completely changed.

Like a lot of the other cosplayers here, he didn’t buy his costume, he made it, and he loves to show it off.

“I built this all pretty much (from) scratch. The helmet is an actual Hasbro helmet that I manipulated with heat and cut out parts, used Bondo and resin. And I just pretty much painted everything myself."
