Public health officials announced a raccoon captured in North Wilmington’s Chalfonte neighborhood on Thursday tested positive for rabies.

The raccoon was picked up after fighting with dogs nearby. It was then euthanized.

Public health officials say Delawareans who thinks their pet may have been bitten by this raccoon should call their veterinarian or the Department of Agriculture.

Officials also warned residents that if they or their pet are ever bitten or scratched by a raccoon, they should call their healthcare provider or the Division of Public Health’s Rabies Program.

The Division of Public Health has tested 24 animals for rabies since January 2017. This raccoon is the fourth animal to test positive. A dog, a cat and another raccoon also tested positive.

Public health officials recommend Delawareans vaccinate their pets and livestock - a critical step in preventing rabies. State law requires dogs, cats and ferrets over six months old to be vaccinated against rabies by a licensed veterinarian.
