Univ. of Delaware announces its roadmap for reopening

Delaware Public Media

The University of Delaware unveils its initial plans for reopening campus to students this fall.

UD President Dennis Assanis says fall semester classes will start Sept. 1st.

But in a letter to the university community, he outlined how different things will be as the school navigates the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Classes will be a blend of in-person and online learning.  Any class with more than 49 students will be virtual and all fall classes will finish online after the Thanksgiving break. Online options will also be available to students with health restrictions or international students facing travel restrictions.

Face coverings will be mandatory indoors and UD is modifying classrooms, labs, its residence and dining halls to allow for social distancing. The school will work with the state on testing and contact tracing protocols.  And it is developing plans to handle housing, food and medical care for students that need to be isolated or quarantined when positive cases arise.

Tuition for all students is being frozen, but room and board and some fees will increase by just over $600 dollars combined to pay for additional health services and increase operating costs.

Students living on campus will move inover an extended period of time starting in mid-August and housing assignments will focus on reducing density and decreasing contagion opportunities.
