Rain and snow mix followed by winds and low temps this weekend

Delaware Public Media

A storm is expected to bring a mix of snow and rain this weekend before hitting the first state with a blast of cold.

Light snow will likely start Saturday afternoon, transitioning into rain Saturday evening and then back to a wintery mix of snow and rain by Sunday afternoon as temperatures drop drastically.

“Temperatures early in the day may be in the 40s, but they will tank rather quickly into the 30s and 20s by afternoon and then by the evening hours they could be dropping into the teens,” said area National Weather Service Meteorologist Chad Shafer.

The cold temperatures will be accompanied by high winds gusting 30 to 40 miles per hour creating a below zero wind chill.

Shafer says he is concerned there may be some scattered power outages near Delaware’s coast during the extreme cold.

“Winds that strong—and they may even be stronger, particularly near the coast—you may have some scattered power outages with that,” said Shafer. “And, given the cold that’s coming in, power outages are a little bit more concerning, because, of course, people will want the heat on.”

One to two inches of precipitation is forecasted statewide over the weekend and less than an inch of snow accumulation is expected for the northern half of the state.

The projected overnight low on Sunday is 10 degrees Fahrenheit.
