The Delaware Department of Correction faces a new lawsuit brought by the family of an inmate who committed suicide.
The lawsuit filed this week alleges staff from correctional medical care contractor Connections CSP and DOC failed to adequately treat Darius Sarro’s mental health conditions during a two-year period. Sarro was 23 when died in October 2017 while being held at the Morris Community Corrections Center in Dover.
The lawsuit - filed by Sarro’s mother Kelly - claims Connections and DOC staff mishandled or ignored his reports of sexual assault, bullying by other inmates and mental health complaints. It also claims DOC officers failed to follow Prison Rape Elimination Act guidelines.
The Department of Correction has been dismissed from a separate suit from the family of Luis Cabrera. Cabrera family's attorney Stephen Hampton said the amended complaint filed this week was a mutual decision to avoid additional litigation.
That lawsuit alleges Connections CSP staffers “maliciously” denied Cabrera medical care before his death in November 2018.
