Improvements and upgrades are being made to portions of a state park in Sussex County, near Dagsboro.
Work at Holts Landing State Park’s Sea Hawk Trail is slated to start in the next six weeks or so.
“There’s going to be a new boardwalk out on the site, because of the wetland that’s there. And we’re going to improve some of the trails that connect into that. So people will have a much better vantage point for observing the wetland and a much drier crossing than what they’re used to,” said Matt Chesser - the environmental program administrator with Delaware State Parks.
Chesser says right now people are forced to jump across a stream and walk along a beach to get from one side of the park to the other; the upgrades will alleviate that problem.
He says the additional 655-foot-long boardwalk will also connect the northeast portion of the Sea Hawk Trail with the northwest portion.
Chesser notes the project will also add 1,300-feet of gravel trail to the existing 4,000-plus-feet (4,416) of gravel trail.
Work is expected to take 3-4 months. The $800,000 cost will be paid by a combination of federal recreational trail money and state trail funding.
Chesser notes Holts Landing State Park is also getting a new playground. State Senate Minority Leader Gerald Hocker and State Representative Ron Gray are paying for that with money in their Community Transportation Funds budgets.
