Give the gift of lottery tickets this holiday - but not to kids

The Delaware Lottery is reminding everyone to “gift responsibly” this holiday season.

Buying lottery tickets to give as gifts is common and seems innocuous.

But the Delaware Lottery’s assistant director for marketing and sales Barbara Miller, says the agency has one fairly stern reminder about doing that.

“We’re just basically reminding the players to play responsibly - that lottery tickets are NOT for kids. Do NOT give them to your children. Give them to adults 18 and over but NOT to the kids,” Miller said.

Miller says there is a problem, especially around the holidays, of lottery tickets leading to gambling problems.

“And we’re using the holiday time to create awareness regarding the risks of underage lottery play during the holiday season,” said Miller.

Miller notes that according to the National Council on Problem Gambling, many young people report their first gambling experience between 9- and 11-years-old.
