Food Bank continues distributing trade mitigation food, some left over from other states

The Food Bank of Delaware is putting more trade mitigation food in the hands of Delawareans in need.

30,000 pounds of it was handed out in boxes this week at the Department of Health and Social Services’ campus in New Castle

The food comes from the USDA which is paying farmers affected by Chinese trade tariffs for the product. And Food Bank CEO Patricia Beebe says more keeps coming in.

“We get in a tractor trailer load of trade mitigation product a week, sometimes two in a week,” said Beebe. “And that’s a lot of product. If you’ve seen a tractor trailer when it’s fully stacked, that’s a lot of product.”

Beebe adds a strong volunteer corps and a new 80,000 square foot facility has Delaware accepting unused trade mitigation product from food banks in other states.

“Some of the other Food Banks no longer have the space that we now have,” said Beebe. “So if they turn it down and they are close by we are being offered that product which, of course, we are accepting.”

The Food Bank and DHSS hope to distribute 1,000 53-pound non-perishable food boxes statewide.  Some fruit, vegetable and dairy products are also available.

Income eligible Delawareans need only show a picture ID and proof of address to receive a food box.
