Fire at UD Chabad Center ruled arson

Aug 26, 2020

A fire at the University of Delaware Chabad Center for Jewish Life Tuesday night has been ruled arson, with no evidence yet of hate crime.

The fire on South College Ave. in Newark was reported just after 11 p.m.

Aetna Hose Hook & Ladder fought the fire alongside several other companies for three hours. The building sustained “heavy fire damage" amounting to around $75,000, according to the state Fire Marshal’s office.

Assistant State Fire Marshal Michael Chionchio says a criminal arson investigation is underway. Investigators are looking for tips and following leads.

Chionchio says there are no signs yet that it was a hate crime, although the investigation is in the early stages.
