DSU investigating potential link between campus hazing and car accident

Delaware Public Media

Delaware State University is looking into the role hazing by one of its fraternities may have played in a weekend car accident.

On Saturday, a 2007 Chevy Impala carrying its driver and three other men crossed over the median on Rt. 1 near Smyrna crashing into a Toyota Tacoma.

The driver and front passenger of the Chevy were transported to Christiana Care Hospital in critical condition. All others in the accident were reported in stable condition.

DSU announced Tuesday it is conducting an internal investigation into a hazing incident at one of its fraternities and its possible connection to the accident.

Campus administration is suspending the fraternity Kappa Alpha Psi from all campus activities until the investigation is completed.

DSU President Dr. Wilma Mishoe and Executive Vice President Dr. Tony Allen issued a joint statement saying, "The University does not condone hazing or abusive conduct in any fashion, at any time." It went on to say, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured students, their families and the entire campus community.”

A DSU spokesperson said the Delaware State University Police is conducting the investigation through its Office of Student Affairs.
