DNREC, City of Lewes want dunes cleared of illegally stored personal items

Submitted Photo
Some beach area residents are storing their boats, kayaks and other items on the dunes in Lewes - rather than carry them back home.

Delaware’s Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) and the City of Lewes want people to clear the dunes as summer winds down.

City officials claim this summer the dunes in Lewes have become cluttered with personal items like boats and kayaks.

And they’re launching an awareness campaign this week aimed at addressing that issue.

The officials say it’s illegal to store those personal items on the dunes They also note they harm the dunes, preventing them from protecting coastal properties and providing natural habitat for native wildlife.

The City and DNREC’s Shoreline & Waterway Management Section are mailing flyers to remind all Lewes property owners near the dunes – that storing items on them is against the law in Delaware.

DNREC is also reminding property owners and  guests that state law limits pedestrian access and vehicle traffic on the dunes. Operation of motorized vehicles, transportation or storage of boats on them is prohibited - along with pedestrian traffic, except at dune crossing locations approved by DNREC.
