Volunteers with the Brandywine Valley SPCA greeted nearly 350 dogs and cats arriving in Delaware Tuesday.
The pets come here from coastal shelters in the Carolinas at risk of damage from Hurricane Dorian.
More than 200 were flown in to New Castle Airport by Wings of Rescue marking that group’s 20th flight delivering pets to the BVSPCA. The rest of the animals were driven up by the Best Friends Animal Society, arriving later in the day.
“They are homeless animals that were up for adoption,” said BVSPCA spokeswoman Linda Torelli. “They’re moving out to escape flooding. They’re also making space so any pets impacted by the storm can stay in that area and be reunited with their families.”
Torelli adds her organization is accepting donations at bvspca.org/dorian to help with the influx of furry friends.
Dorian is expected to get dangerously close to Florida's east coast late Tuesday early Wednesday and will likely hit Georgia and the Carolinas in the coming days.
“We’re also looking for donations at our rescue center in Georgetown for towels for bedding for the animals, wet dog food, wet cat food and newspaper for cat litter,” she said.
The transported pets will be put up for adoption at the BVSPCA, its partner shelters in the area and ASPCA partners in New England.
