A new book from a Harrington author allows readers to take a step back in time.

“Harrington Through Time: A Hometown Story” was written by Douglas Poore, a lifelong Harrington resident and public servant.

Poore says he wrote the book to highlight his hometown and its stories, past and present, “Our Town is very rich in history; it’s our 150th Anniversary here in the city. So it kind of all flowed together to motivate me want to share our Town’s story.”

Poore says Harrington was founded as a crossroad Stagecoach stop in the 1700’s, known then as Clarks Corner.

He says Harrington then took center stage when it was made the Delaware Railroad’s final stop in the 1950’s. As the end of the line, anyone wishing to ship goods by rail, or ride the train, came to Harrington.

Poore is curator for the Greater Harrington Historic Society (GHHS).  Before that, the recently retired paramedic served the community in that role - and as a member of the volunteer fire company - for 30 years.

He says he wrote this book to help tell Harrington’s rich history, “This Town has seen a lot of history roll through it - for lack of a better description - with the railroad. It started as a Stagecoach stop. It’s been a transportation hub since it was created. And I just wanted to share that with people who have lived here - maybe most of their life - and didn’t realize it or new citizens that have come to town.”

He notes the book also tells Harrington’s story through photos from the Greater Harrington Historic Society Museum, citizens and the Delaware Public Archives.

Proceeds from the book will go to the Harrington Museum.

Copies of the book can be purchased through Acadia Publishing.
