Some communities in New Castle County are getting new surveillance cameras.
A total of 18 high-definition cameras will be deployed by the New Castle County police department.
Police Chief Vaughn Bond, Jr., says his department already had some cameras, but needed more.
“It is well known to us that cameras play an integral part in terms of preventing crime, and also solving crime,” Bond said at a press event Wednesday.
The cameras were paid for by $100,000 from State Sen. Darius Brown’s annual Community Transportation Fund allocation.
County police say they’ll focus on the Route 9 and Gov. Printz Blvd. corridors. They’re not revealing the specific locations, since they’re meant to be concealed and help with active investigations.
County Councilman Jea Street, Sr., who represents the Route 9 Corridor, said he hopes the cameras will help improve case clearance rates, and pointed to specific shootings in his district he says are unsolved.
“These children, and these guns, are out of control,” Street said.
