John Carney assumes the title of Delaware's 74th governor.

Many Delawareans gathered to support the state’s 74th governor John Carney at his inauguration Tuesday morning, but Carney’s swearing in also attracted longtime friends and supporters from elsewhere.

Among those braving the rain to watch Carney take oath into office was David Mathews from Honolulu. Mathews went to Dartmouth College with Carney, where they were fraternity brothers and played football before graduating together in 1978.

“He’s smart. He works hard,” Mathews said. “I think he’ll do a great job.

Reenie Murphy came from Boston. She said her husband also went to college with the new governor and she believes in Carney’s leadership.

“He’s a great person to lead the state,” Murphy said. “He’s so moderate and thoughtful and smart and I think those are the kinds of leaders we need across the country, so I think Delaware is lucky to have him.”

Joseph Bodnar from Wilmington, agreed, saying Carney’s prior political experience makes him a good fit for governor.

“He was lieutenant governor, so he’s well-groomed for this position,” Bodnar said.

And MaryAnn Miller of Wilmington said she’s particularly excited to see what the new governor can do with statewide K-12 education.

“With the new term, I expect him to carry on some of the efforts from Governor Markell and put in some new legislation for education and for handicapped,” Miller said.

Carney has said he looks to make the state’s department of education more of a support agency than a regulatory one, just one effort that begins now as he officially gets to work.
