Delaware Republicans say state spending is unsustainable

Republican lawmakers in Delaware say the four billion dollar budget the governor signed this week is evidence state spending is out of control.

Joe Miro is a state GOP representative who delivered the party’s weekly video message. He said this is the first time he’s ever seen the budget go above four billion dollars.

“The growth in the budget this year of about four-and-a-half percent over last year’s budget is substantial.  And I’m not sure we can maintain an increase in the budget to that magnitude," he said.

Miro is concerned Delaware won’t be able to maintain its current level of spending if it suffers any loss of revenues.

He said the state’s reliance on selling unclaimed property for revenues is unstable, especially as a lawsuit by 21 states threatens these funds.

Miro is also calling for an increased accountability of grants to nonprofits, saying many of these organizations are duplicating services.

He said the state needs to ensure people receiving state assistance truly need it.
