Wilmington City Council approves raises, food truck pilot program

Wilmington City Council has given the green light to a pair of union contracts with pay raises, as well as similar raises for non-union employees.

City Council approved the ordinances by a vote of 11-1.

The 575 employees involved will received a cost of living increase starting July 1st.  There are also one time bonuses of  $2,000 and $4,000 dollars based on how long each employee has been on the payroll.

The raises and bonuses will cost the city more than $3 million.

In a statement, Wilmington Mayor Dennis Williams said, our non-uniformed workforce has been without a cost of living adjustment since July 2008. The Administration worked closely with union leadership to ensure we reached an agreement that satisfies the financial needs of its members, while also remaining fiscally responsible.”

In addition to salary increases, the agreements include provisions for increased healthcare premiums.

City Council also  approved a pilot program to allow food trucks to operate in certain locations and authorized creation of a land bank to help revitalize vacant or rundown properties during its Thursday session.
