Another Delawarean takes a leading role in planning president-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration.
Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester was named a co-chair of Biden’s Inaugural Committee—along with Rep. Jim Clyburn, Rep. Cedric Richmond, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
Blunt Rochester is not the only Delawarean helping plan the celebration. Delaware State University President Tony Allen was named CEOof the Presidential Inaugural Committee last week.
The inauguration usually features parades, galas and balls and ceremonies. But because of the coronavirus, many of the activities are expected to be virtual this year.
Blunt Rochester says the goal is to honor traditions while keeping people safe.
“The inauguration is going to be consistent with how Joe Biden ran his campaign, which was responsively, creatively and really making sure that we follow the science.”
There are reportsthat Donald Trump plans to skip the inauguration and hold his own event to draw attention away.
Blunt Rochester says this would be “more than a bad look.”
“We’re not going to focus on it,” she said. “Joe Biden is a true leader, and he will be a uniter.”
Blunt Rochester says the Inaugural Committee’s goal is to use the event to “show unity” and to focus on “a vision for the future of our country.”
